Masculinity as part of Feminism

How does the media and the portrayal of what a man is affect women and the goals of a feminist movement? Please, watch this video by Sanjay Newton found on Youtube by Jeremy Dias.

If this video has inspired you, I thoroughly encourage you to rent a copy of Tough Guise. By watching this movie, you will realize as I have that how we portray masculinity and the desirable traits a man should have is a great enforcer of gender roles, and limiter in the development of equality rights.

  1. I am inspired by the proactive approach by Jackson Katz. There is something to be said when men discourage other men from acting in a violent manner.

Of note, he connects the violence to a male backlash against women's economic and social gains and gay liberation.

This should not be a fight. Women simply need to value the men that do not aspire to the 'tough guise'.

  2. I thought the connection between the "tough guise" and the social gains made by women and gays quite interesting, too - it makes perfect sense.
And I could not agree more with your last statement. But then you break into the whole other issue of what women are conditioned to believe is attractive. It's such a cyclical problem, it gets a bit exhausting, don't you think?

  3. Well yes, it is exhausting unless you find yourself interested in other women - then you can breathe a sigh of relief, I suppose. Smile

Otherwise, you must rely on your good sense.
